
Spare And Stiles Tabbed October Student-Athletes Of The Month

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Junior Josh Spare of the cross country program and redshirt junior goalkeeper Melanie Stiles of the soccer team have been named the student-athletes of the month following an outstanding October athletically.

Spare posted the fourth-fastest 8K time in program history at the Paul Short Run Oct. 5 with a personal-best 24:16 to finish 58th in a field that featured hundreds of runners. He then helped ECU finish third of 18 schools at the Pirate Invitational Oct. 19 at Overton's Lake Kristi. Spare also captured all-conference honors at the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships with a 13th-place individual result.

Stiles posted 47 saves in six games in October, including 10 in East Carolina's 1-1 tie with then No. 8 Memphis. She was named AAC Goalkeeper of the Week Oct. 14 after earning selection to the league's weekly honor roll Oct. 1. Stiles put the exclamation mark on a strong campaign with AAC Second Team accolades. She started all 18 games for ECU in goal and finished with 91 saves as well as six shutouts.
