GREENVILLE, N.C. – After an eight-day break for the holidays, the ECU women's basketball team is back on the road as the Pirates take on Georgia on Sunday afternoon.
ECU (3-9) will be looking to snap a five-game losing streak, including the past two at the West Palm Beach Invitational. ECU is just 1-3 on the road so far this season, earning a win at Longwood. The Pirates continue to be one of the best teams in the nation at grabing steals, as ECU ranks third in the country in steals (166) and fourth in steals per game (13.8). The Pirates are also third in turnovers forced, averaging 25.5 and fifth in turnover margin (+9.75). Lashonda Monk and Dominique Claytor are fifth and seventh in the nation, respectively, in steals, as Monk has racked up 43 and Claytor has 38. Monk continues to lead the team in scoring, averaging 13.8 points. Taniyah Thompson led ECU in scoring in both games in Florida, including a career-high 29 points against Dayton. She became just the ninth ECU player to hit at least six three-pointers in a single game and is averaging 12.9 points. Claytor has been the team's top rebounder in the absence of Raven Johnson, who is injured. Claytor is averaging 5.6 boards. Â
Georgia (8-4) is coming off beating Gardner-Webb 84-56. Two of Georgia's four losses have come to teams currently ranked in the top-10 in the country and the Bulldogs are 6-3 at home. The Bulldogs are led in scoring by Gabby Connally, who is averaging 13.8 points. Connally also leads the team with 46 assists and 24 steals. Maya Caldwell is also scoring in double-figures, averaging 10.0 points. Jenna Staiti is tops on the team in rebounding, hauling in 5.9 boards to go with 9.8 points. Georgia is ranked 80th in the country in field goal defense, holding opponents to just 36.9% shooting. On offense, the Bulldogs prefer to score inside, as they rank 299th in the country in three-point field goals made, averaging just 4.3 per game. The Pirates will also look to turn the Bulldogs over, as Georgia averages 17.6 turnovers, which places the Bulldogs 242nd in the NCAA.
ECU and Georgia have split four meetings between the schools, all of which came on neutral sites. ECU won in 1976 and 1978 while Georgia topped the Pirates in 1977 and 1983. ECU is just 5-17 all-time against SEC opponents. The Pirates last beat an SEC team in 2006 when they topped Alabama. Along with beating Georgia and Alabama twice, ECU has also beaten Florida once.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., in Stegeman Coliseum. Fans can stream the game on SEC Network Extra or follow the live stats here.
