Pirates Shutout Campbell 7-0
February 16, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – In a dominating performance, the ECU women's tennis team shut out Campbell 7-0 on Saturday afternoon inside the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
"Today was a great day for our program!" said head coach Tom Morris. "One of the ideas we stress to our players is to learn to battle hard in every position. Today we played solid in all three doubles positions and continued at the same level in every singles match. I am very pleased with our effort today!"
ECU showed its depth during doubles as the Pirates routed Campbell on courts two and three. Nastja Rettich and Hsia Ho Chiao were the first pair to finish their match, topping Lea Cutura and Inma Ramon 6-1. Right behind them was the duo of Celia Ruiz and Minette Van Vreden, who beat Isabel Boada and Lucile Pons 6-1 on court two.
In singles, the Pirates' dominance continued as the first three ECU players to play dropped just one game across their first sets. Lisa Hofbauer was the first to complete her match, rattling off a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ana Castillo on court one.
The match was clinched not too long later when Ruiz and Alisa Diercksen both win 6-0, 6-4. Diercksen's win came on court three at the expense of Cutura while Ruiz beat Regen on court two to clinch the match.
With the result no longer in doubt, the remaining three Pirates continued to compete. Van Vreden beat Pons 6-1, 6-3 on court five. Rettich knocked off Inma Ramon 6-2, 6-1 on court six.
The final match was the closest of the day. Martina Paladini-Jennings took the first set against Alexandra Nicoara, but Nicoara answered by winning the second set. The match went to a third-set tiebreaker where Paladini-Jennings finally prevailed, winning 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5)
