GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU track and field team culminates its indoor season this weekend when it heads to Birmingham, Ala., for the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Â
The entire meet will be streamed through Facebook via American Athletic Conference Digital Network Plus. The league will also provide live results.
Â
"Both teams are very excited to compete this weekend," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We had a meeting on Monday night and I encouraged both teams to compete with a lot of passion, excitement and pride. This is obviously the one meet that we want everyone to compete at the highest level and come out with some personal bests. We have had a great indoor season up to this point and there's no reason to believe that we would not continue that momentum into this weekend. I feel like both teams are up to the challenge of having a great weekend."
Â
In last year's league indoor meet, the women claimed their highest-ever finish at fourth while the men placed eighth.
Â
Senior Nick Ciaccia is a contender for all-conference honors in the 5,000-meter run, entering the championships with the third-best time in the league this season at a school-record 14:22.67. Classmate Hakeem Horton is currently fourth on the AAC performance list in the long jump with a season-best mark of 7.51 meters.
Â
On the women's side, senior Courtney Warner has a great shot to reach the podium in the 60m as she is fifth entering the championships with a time of 7.46. Fellow senior Grace Sullivan is a threat in the mile, taking a conference fourth-best time of 4:51.94 into the weekend.
Â
In the pole vault, sophomore Sommer Knight cleared a school-record 4.14 meters earlier this season and is seeded second. Sophomore Mackenzie Whitaker heads into the championships with third-best mark among AAC athletes in the long jump (5.98m). The sister duo of junior Bria Stith and sophomore Brooke Stith also look to make noise in their respective events – the pentathlon and triple jump. Bria holds a school-record total of 3,587 points in the pentathlon while Brooke is fifth on the league performance list in the triple jump (12.53m).
