NEW ORLEANS --- After having five days off to rest and focus on individual skill work, the ECU Pirates return to the hardwood Saturday, Feb. 23, against Tulane in New Orleans at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT.
The Pirates (9-16, 2-11 The American) have lost five in a row since their last victory on Jan. 31 over Tulane (4-21, 0-13). Freshman Jayden Gardner led ECU with 15 points and nine rebounds in its 66-65 win over the Green Wave. Seth LeDay added 13 points off the bench with Fleming scoring 11 and Dimitrije Spasojevic scoring 10.
Shawn Williams made two free throws with five seconds remaining to put the Pirates up four before Jordan Cornish's 3 at the buzzer set the final margin. Caleb Daniels led four players in double figures for Tulane with 17 points.
It was the fourth straight game in the series decided by three points or less and ECU's fifth victory over the Green Wave in the last six meetings.
ECU has won 10 of the last 14 meetings in the series after losing nine of the first 11.
Among those 10 victories, includes five in a row at Devlin Fieldhouse. ECU escaped with an 82-80 victory in New Orleans last season with Williams scoring 29 points on 9-of-10 shooting, burying all six of his 3-point attempts. Isaac Fleming also had 18 points in the victory.
Williams is coming off a season-high 26 points against Tulsa on Sunday, draining a career-best eight 3-point attempts. He is shooting 50.0 percent (16-of-32) from beyond the 3-point arc the last five after making just 5-of-28 3-point attempts in the Pirates' four previous games.
Gardner, who claimed his fifth American Athletic Conference Freshman-of-the-Week award Monday, finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds for his ninth double-double. He is the only player in the conference to ranks among the top 10 in scoring (fifth) and rebounding (second).
Daniels is one of three Tulane players to average double digit points per game with 15.8, which ranks him 10th in The American. Samir Sehic (11.2) and Jordan Cornish (10.4) are also averaging double figure points for the Green Wave, which has lost 15 in a row.
ECU is averaging 67.0 points per game and allowing 72.0 points to its opponents. Tulane post similar numbers, averaging 66.0 points per contest and surrendering 77.0.
