From wire and staff reports
GREENVILLE, N.C.— Samajae Haynes-Jones scored 18 points as Wichita State beat ECU 65-49 on Wednesday night to notch its third-straight win.
Haynes-Jones was 7 of 9 from the field including two from distance for the Shockers (11-11, 4-6 American Athletic Conference). Markis McDuffie added 14 points, Jaime Echenique had 10 rebounds in addition to his eight points and Asbjorn Midtgaard led the team with 11 rebounds.
Wichita State dominated the boards, outrebounding the Pirates 46-27 with 31 rebounds on defense and held ECU to 34.6 percent from the field, while shooting 39.3 percent itself.
"I thought Wichita State did a good job of putting us in tough spots offensively, but I thought as it progressed, our lack of competitiveness and energy was eminent," ECU Head Coach Joe Dooley said. "I think Haynes-Jones controlled the whole game and McDuffie was great. Our offense was horrific, and I thought that was a tell-tale sign."
The Shockers took used a 16-4 run to break an 11-all tie and take a 27-15 lead with 4:40 left before halftime. WSU extended it first half lead to 17 on a lay-up from Haynes-Jones before Tyler Foster hit a 3-pointer just ahead of the halftime buzzer.
Wichita State lead by 14 at halftime,34-20, holding ECU (9-13, 2-8) to a season-low for points in a half.
ECU closed it to 38-27 early in the second half. McDuffie answered with a 3-pointer as the Pirates fell into a slump midway through and a dunk by Midtgaard pushed the Shockers' lead to 50-34 with just under nine minutes remaining.
Isaac Fleming and Jayden Gardner scored 11 points apiece for the Pirates.
"Coach is disappointed in us, we're disappointed in ourselves," Gardner said. "We let everyone down. We just can't play like that. We need to come out with effort and energy from the start."
The Pirates return to action Sunday, Feb. 10, at USF.
