Pirates Enjoy Successful Opening Outdoor Weekend At 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The ECU track and field program opened its outdoor season over the weekend at the Charlotte 49er Classic, turning in some impressive performances. The women won five events while the men picked up one individual title.

"It was great to get our first outdoor meet under our belts," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We had a lot of great performances for the first Outdoor meet of the year. We also had numerous lifetime personal records. We now have a measuring stick for what we need to work on moving forward. We need to get back and have some great practices and get ready for the Raleigh Relays. We need to continue to build on the momentum and the energy of this past weekend."

Senior Nick Ciaccia set a school record in the men's 3,000m with a time of 8:29.30 to finish in fourth place. Classmate Hakeem Horton snagged the event title in the long jump by turning in a mark of 7.27 meters.

In terms of event winners, senior Courtney Warner collected two individual wins, capturing the 100m and 200m races in respective times of 11.78 and 23.82. Classmate Cedrina Singletary was third in the 100m and second in the 200m.

Sophomore Alyssa Sandy excelled in the hurdles, winning the 100m discipline with a time of 14.09. In the field events, freshman Mia Alamo-Worley took top honors in the pole vault with a mark of 3.50 meters and sophomore Tavia Ranger won the shot put, checking in with a mark of 13.29 meters.

In the invite section of the women's 5,000m, freshman Anna Bristle ran a great time of 16:51.64 which is the third fastest in program history.

The women's 4x400 relay team of sophomore Brooke Stith, junior D'Nia Freeman, Warner and freshman Mariah Atwater earned a third-place result, crossing the finish line in 3:41.16.

Sophomore Sommer Knight captured second place in the invitational section of the pole vault, clearing 3.85 meters. Junior Bria Stith and senior Kristen Stephens finished second and fifth in the heptathlon with point totals of 4,541 and 4,470.

ECU is back in action March 29-30 at NC State for the Raleigh Relays.
