ECU Finishes As Runner-Up At The American Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The ECUÂ men's swimming and diving team finished as the runner-up at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship, which concluded Saturday night at the IUPUI Natatorium.

The Pirates amassed 820 points, but finished second behind Cincinnati (966) for the second straight season. UConn finished third with 647 points followed by SMU with 613 points.
ECU sophomore Jacek Arentewicz repeated as the 200-yard breaststroke champion with a NCAA B qualifying time of 1:54.74, reaching the finish more than two seconds in front of silver medalist Domonic Polling of Cincinnati (1:56.85).

Magnus Andersen and Victor Dos Santos also reached the podium and earned all-conference accolades on the final day of competition. Anderson finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:44.09), while Santos claimed third-place in the 100-yard freestyle (44.26).

Santos teamed with Eric Hinderup, Gavin Erdmann and Blaz Demsar to capture the silver medal in the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:56.02), finishing one-tenth of second behind event-winner Cincinnati (2:56.01).

Marek Osina was named Freshman-of-the-Meet after collecting all-conference honors in three events by winning the 400-yard IM and medaling in the 200-yard IM and 800-yard freestyle relay.

A trio of ladies reached the podium for ECU on the final day of the championship as Marianna Vignoli, Mary Warker and Catherine Johnson each earned all-conference accolades with a third-place finish.

Vignoli claimed the bronze medal and set the ECU freshman record in the 1650-yard freestyle (16:36.89) as did Mary Warker on the diving platform (214.60). Johnson captured bronze in the 100-yard freestyle (49.90).

Houston won its third consecutive American Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving title with 916 points with Cincinnati finishing a distant second with 604.5 points. ECU finished in sixth-place.
