Pirates Cruise Past Davidson 5-2
March 30, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The final three matches needed a third set, but the ECU women's tennis team had already clinched a 5-2 win over Davidson on Saturday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.
"I'm extremely proud of our team, the way we're performing and battling through each match," said head coach Tom Morris. "We're dealing with some injuries, but they're playing hard and playing their hearts out. I can't ask for any more than that. Davidson just beat Brown and they're a good program so it's a good win for our team. We're playing solid tennis and coming through as a team. Our doubles is on cruise control to an extent. We've won 18 straight points and that opens the door for the rest of the match. It makes it a little bit easier in singles."
ECU (18-2) continues its record winning streak, as the Pirates have now won 18 straight matches as well as owning a perfect 7-0 home record. Davidson (9-8) loses for the seventh time in 10 matches away from home.
ECU's top two doubles tandems had little trouble dispatching their Davidson opponents. Alisa Diercksen and Lisa Hofbauer won their 12th straight match and 17th of the season by beating Megan Scholvinck and Elizabeth Truluck 6-0 on the top court. ECU clinched the point when Celia Ruiz and Minette Van Vreden topped Samantha Armas and Alexandra Abele 6-2 on court two. It was the 11th straight victory for Ruiz and Van Vreden.
Although three singles matches ended up needing all three sets to separate the pairings, the Pirates dominated the other three to quickly clinch the match. First, Nastja Rettich cruised past Alyssa Hahn 6-1, 6-1 on court six. Ruiz and Diercksen clinched the match for ECU with wins in quick succession. First, Ruiz beat Abele 6-1, 6-0 on court two and then Diercksen topped Gabrielle Centenari 6-1, 6-4 on court three. It was the 13th straight win for both Ruiz and Diercksen.
The Wildcats got one point back when Truluck took the final two sets against Hsia Ho Chiao to win 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-2) on court five. ECU answered when Hofbauer completed a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) victory against Scholvinck on the top court. The match came to an end when Armas beat Van Vreden 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) on court four.
ECU will be on the road next weekend, the last road trip of the regular season. The Pirates will be at NC Central on Friday afternoon before heading to Richmond for a Saturday morning match.
