Gameday: ECU Hosts UConn On Senior Day
March 09, 2019 | Men's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- ECU closes out the 2018-19 regular season Sunday, March 10 against UConn at 2 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum and will recognize the program's three seniors – Isaac Fleming, Addison Hill and Justice Obasohan – prior to tip-off.
Â
The Pirates will look to snap a three-game losing streak, both to UConn and overall. Their last win over the Huskies came on Senior Day two years ago when Caleb White scored 28 to lead ECU to a 66-62 victory in his final appearance inside Williams Arena.
Â
A year ago, Shawn Williams repeated White's performance with 26 points on 8-of-15 shootings, including seven made 3-pointers. However, UConn junior Jalen Adams matched Williams with 28 points to give the Huskies an 84-80 win.
Â
Adams, the Huskies' top scorer this season at 17.0 ppg, hasn't played since suffering a knee injury at Temple on Feb. 9.
Â
Junior Christian Vital is averaging 14.0 ppg and sophomore Alterique Gilbert is scoring 12.6 ppg. Vital scored 18 points in the first meeting between the teams this season, while Adams was held scoreless and Gilbert did not play.
Â
Winterville native Josh Carlton had 20 points and 11 rebounds in helping UConn to a 76-52 win over ECU on Super Bowl Sunday. K.J. Davis was the lone Pirate to score double figures that day, finishing with 13 points while Williams and Jayden Gardner had nine points each.
Â
Since that game, UConn has lost seven of its last eight and is currently tied with SMU for ninth-place in The American with a 5-12 record, two games ahead of the Pirates.
Â
ECU is coming off a 72-55 loss at Wichita State on Tuesday. Isaac Fleming scored a game-high 17 points in the loss and freshman Rico Quinton posted his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Gardner was held under double digit points for just the fifth time this season.
Â
Gardner needs 17 points to break Lester Lyons' 28-year old freshman scoring record of 494. He is averaging a team-best 16.5 ppg which leads all conference rookies in scoring and ranks ninth overall in the league.
Â
The Pirates will be without the services of junior Seth LeDay, who sustained a season-ending knee injury at Wichita State.
