Ruiz Clinches ECU Win On Senior Day
April 13, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After a thrilling four-hour win on Friday, the ECU women's tennis team had a much more comfortable 6-1 win over Connecticut on Saturday inside the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
"It was a great regular season for us," said head coach Tom Morris. "Our team has battled every match, played hard every match. It's just been one of those years where everything has come together. I'm  really proud of the effort out there. It's very hard to go out there and play well every time and this team has figured out how to do that. I'm just really, really proud of this group."
ECU (22-2) heads into the AAC Championship on a program-record 22 –match winning streak. Connecticut (5-11) will play Cincinnati on Sunday to close out its regular season schedule.
In the past 20 matches, ECU had won the doubles point and that streak did not come to an end on Saturday. Celia Ruiz and Minette Van Vreden were unstoppable in a 6-0 win over Julieanne Bou and Mireille Moreau on court two. The point was clinched when Alisa Diercksen and Lisa Hofbauer beat Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph and Luciana Rabines 6-1 on the top court.
ECU's dominance extended into the first three singles matches. After mounting a late comeback to earn the winning point on Friday, Hofbauer turned around and had a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 win over Fitz-Randolph on court one. Her doubles partner, Diercksen bounced back to beat Moreau 6-4, 6-2 on court two.
That set up senior Celia Ruiz to earn the match clinching point on Senior Day. Ruiz certainly had to work for the win, as both sets went into a tiebreaker against Bou on court two. But Ruiz was up to the challenge, winnign 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (9-7) in her final home match.
Connecticut got its first point of the day when Cassie Chung topped Martina Paladini-Jennings 6-3, 6-2. Van Vreden got a win by beating Lazaro 6-1, 6-3.
The day came to an end with the only three-set match. Annija Veinsteina took an early lead against Jacqueine Lazaro, winning the first set in a tiebreaker. But Lazaro won the second set to force it to a third set tiebreaker. Lazaro came out on top there to win 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 1-0 (10-7).
ECU will now await its seed in the American Athletic Conference Championship. First round play will start on Wednesday, April 17 in Orlando, Fla.
