Pirates Fall In AAC Championship First Round
April 18, 2019 | Women's Tennis
TAMPA, Fla. – Matching up for the second time in less than a week, the ECU women's tennis team could not beat Cincinnati in the rematch, falling 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon in the AAC Championship First Round.
Â
ECU finishes its season with a program-record 22-3 ledger and was undefeated at home with a 9-0 mark. The Pirates won all 22 of those matches in a row, the longest winning streak by any ECU team. Cincinnati (12-10) advances to the AAC Championship Quarterfinals where the Bearcats will take on No. 2 seed USF.
Â
The Pirates fell behind early when they dropped the doubles point for just the fourth time this season and the first time since Feb. 8. Annija Veinsteina and Hsia Ho Chiao played together for the first time this season and could not keep up with Caroline Morton and Emma Miceli, falling 6-2 on court three. Cincinnati clinched the point when Antonella Bramato and Alexia Coutino beat Lisa Hofbauer and Alisa Diercksen 6-4 on the top court.
Â
In singles, the match was back and forth. Only one first set was decided in less than 10 total games. ECU had the first set advantage on courts one and five while Cincinnati claimed the opening set on courts one, three, four and six.
Â
The Bearcats doubled their lead on the only lopsided match of the day. Miceli beat Chiao 6-0, 6-1 on court six.
Â
ECU got its first point through Ruiz. The senior won for the fourth time at the conference championship, against zero losses, beating Ioana Guna 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Â
However, ECU was on the brink of defeat when Morton beat Diercksen 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) on court three.
Â
Despite trailing 3-1, ECU still had a chance to pull off the comeback, as the final three matches all went to a decisive third set. Unfortunately for the Pirates, the first one to finish went in favor of Cincinnati. Bramato finished off a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Hofbauer on court one to clinch the match for the Bearcats.
