April 23, 2019 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. ā Bryant Packard laced three doubles and scored three times, while Seth Caddell tallied a pair of hits which included a two-RBI triple as No. 11 ECU completed the season sweep of instate foe UNCW, 8-5, Tuesday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the win the Pirates improve to 30-10 and the Seahawks drop to 20-22.
Ā
Trailing 5-4 going to the bottom half of the eighth inning, ECU scored four runs taking an 8-5 lead and held on for its 12th-straight win at home. Chandler Jenkins led off the frame with a pinch-hit single to left center and moved to second on Caddell's grounder to second base. After Christian Jayne came in to run for Jenkins, Lane Hoover walked and Packard followed with his third double of the night down the left field line plating Jayne and knotting the game at five-all.
Ā
The inning continued with Adam Smith entering the game in place of Henry Ryan on the bump and promptly struck out Brady Lloyd for the second out of the stanza. Spencer Brickhouse was intentionally walked for Smith to face Turner Brown. The righty got Brown to send a grounder to second, but Jackson Meadows couldn't come up with the ball and Hoover scored from third while Packard scored from second making it a 7-5 contest in favor of the Pirates. Alec Burleson followed with an RBI single up the middle pushing across Brickhouse capping the scoring at 8-5.
Ā
Zach Barnes (2-2) earned the win in relief tossing 1.1 scoreless frames allowing a hit and striking out one. Burleson nailed down his fourth save of the year facing a pair of hitters where he gave up one hit. Starter Trey Benton worked 3.1 scoreless frames where he fanned six and allowed four hits. Also getting work out of the bullpen on a staff day was Sam Lanier (2.2 IP, 4 Hs, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 Ks), Evan Voliva (1.0 IP, 2 Hs, 2 Rs, 2 BBs, 1 K) and Cam Colmore (0.1 IP, 2 Hs, 2 Rs).
Ā
Ryan (3-4) suffered the loss surrendering three runs (one earned) on two hits with a walk in one-third of an inning. Starter Justin Walke allowed just one run (earned) on three hits with a walk and three punch outs in 4.1 innings. Including Ryan, UNCW used six pitchers out of the bullpen.
Ā
The Pirates struck first in the match-up between instate rivals taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Packard led off with a double to right-center, which extended his hit streak to a season-high eight games. After Lloyd moved him to third on an infield bunt single, Brickhouse's groundout to short pushed Packard across.
Ā
UNCW tied the game at one-all in the sixth on Noah Bridges single up the middle that scored Cole Weiss, who singled with one out. A wild pitch by Lanier moved him to second before he rushed home on Noah Bridges base hit.
Ā
Caddell's first career triple in the home half of the sixth gave ECU a 3-1 advantage. Jake Washer singled to left field with two outs and Thomas Francisco followed with a pinch-hit single through the left side before both crossed home on Caddell's second hit of the night.
Ā
The two teams traded blows over the next two frames. UNCW tied the game at three-all in the seventh on Kep Brown's RBI base knock to right field and Weiss' RBI single down the left field line.
Ā
ECU once again responded taking a 4-3 lead in the home half of the frame on Brickhouse's double to left-center that scored Packard from third.
Ā
Chris Thorburn's infield single plated Noah Bridges tying the game at four and Meadows' double to left center pushed across Thorburn for a 5-4 UNCW lead.
Ā
ECU tallied 11 hits on the night and improved its record to 18-0 when reaching double-digits in hits. Packard led the way going 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Caddell was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Brickhouse plated a pair and scored a run after going 1-for-3 with a walk and five other Pirates collected a hit on the evening.
Ā
Noah Bridges led five Seahawks with multiple hits going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Greg Jones reached base four times (two hits, two walks), while Brooks Baldwin, Brown and Weiss each chipped in with a pair of hits.
Ā
ECU returns to action on Wednesday, April 24 when it travels to ODU for a 6 p.m. (ET) first pitch at the Bud Metheny Complex.
