ECU Duo To Compete At U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship

GREENVILLE, N.C. – ECU juniors Logan Shuping and Blake Taylor will compete at the 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship at the Bandon Dunes Gold Resort in Bandon, Ore., May 25-29.
The duo advanced for the national championship event back in September after shooting a 63 during the qualifying event at the Florence Country Club in Florence, S.C. They made birdie putts on holes 17 and 18 to get to 7-under 63 and force a playoff for the second qualifying spot. Taylor birdied the first playoff hole — and the second — to send he and Shuping onto the next round.
The U.S. Men's Amateur Four-Ball Championship is open to two-player sides (or teams) amateurs with an individual Handicap Index® not exceeding 5.4. There are no age restrictions and partners are not required to be from the same club, state or country.
Taylor was named to The American all-conference team for the second straight season after posting five Top-10 finishes and recording a 71.97 strokes per round average, second-lowest in school history, during the 2018-19 campaign. He registered the team's low score in five tournaments this season, while shooting par or better in 48.6 percent of his rounds played.
Shuping played 18 total rounds. in six events for ECU this past season and compiled a 77.78 strokes per round average. His best finish of the year was 24th at the ECU Intercollegiate.
"Everything is going to be brand new for Blake and for me," Shuping told the Salisbury Post. "These are links courses. Neither of us has ever played on anything like it.
"We're a good team mostly because we have great chemistry… No matter how big a tournament is, we have fun out there."
A total of 128 sides will compete in the national championship, where each player plays their own ball throughout the round. Each side's score is determined by using the lower score of the partners for each hole. After 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying, the field is reduced to the low 32 sides for the championship's match-play bracket, from which the eventual champion is determined.
