GREENVILLE, N.C. – Redshirt junior catcher Jake Washer of the baseball team and senior Carley Cox of the women's golf program have been selected the Student-Athletes of the Month for May following an outstanding month of achievement.
Â
Washer hit .349 (15-for-43) during the month with 10 runs scored, five home runs and 15 RBI. He helped ECU clinch its first-ever American Athletic Conference regular season title and later earned AAC First-Team honors as the Pirates won the league by a full seven games over second-place Cincinnati. Washer was also tabbed the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Greenville Regional, batting .412 (7-for-17) with six runs scored, nine RBI and four home runs during the tournament. The Pirates will travel to face No. 7 national seed Louisville in the super regional round this weekend.
Â
Cox was the Pirates' top performer at the NCAA Auburn Regional after carding a final round 73 (1-over) and claiming a share of 17th place with a 54-hole score of 218 (2 over par). In the round, she registered four birdies and 11 pars. ECU ended up in eighth place as a team - the highest NCAA Regional finish program history - besting their ninth-place showing in 2009.
