GREENVILLE, N.C. – After a couple of weeks off to asses things following its first indoor meet of the 2020 campaign, the East Carolina track and field program looks to continue building toward the conference championships when it travels to Virginia Tech for the Hokie Invitational Friday and Saturday.
The meet kicks off Friday at 10 a.m. with the heptathlon and concludes Saturday at approximately 4:30 p.m. after the men's 4x400 relay.
In addition to the host Hokies, ECU is slated to compete against student-athletes from Virginia, North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, North Carolina A&T, Elon, High Point, Radford, Georgetown and VCU.
"We are very excited to compete in our second meet of the indoor season this weekend at Virginia Tech," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "This weekend's competition will be a very good test for all of our athletes on both teams to see how we measure up against ACC competition. My hope is that we continue the momentum from our opening weekend at North Carolina."
In the season-opening Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge two weeks ago, the Pirate women took home a pair of event titles as freshman Melicia Mouzzon and junior Mackenzie Whitaker won the 60-meter dash and 800-meter run respectively. Mouzzon posted a time of 7.42, which is the third fastest mark in school history, while Whitaker crossed the finish line in 2:23.09.
Senior Naomi Whitaker showed well in her first attempt at the 60-meter hurdles this season, winning the preliminaries in a time of 8.69 before finishing second in the finals at 8.68. In the field, junior Brooke Stith captured second place in the long jump, notching a mark of 5.79 meters. Back on the track, Stith, senior D'Nia Freeman, Mouzzon and senior Alyssa Sandy teamed up to claim third place in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:54.92. On the American Athletic Conference performance list, Mouzzon currently ranks third in the 60m.
As for the men, freshman Royal Burris clinched second in the prelims of the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.82 but did not compete in the finals. Junior Blake Mathews finished third in the high jump, clearing 1.97 meters and finishing just outside of the program top 10 list. Freshman Jake Justice took seventh in the pole vault but turned in the eighth-best mark in school history at 4.50 meters.
Following the Hokie Invitational, East Carolina will head to the University of South Carolina for the Carolina Challenge which is scheduled for Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
"I have explained to both of our teams how important it is that we continue to improve each and every week," Kraft added. "I also told them we only get so many chances to perform so we have to make the most of those opportunities."
