PHILADELPHIA – East Carolina will play three of its next four games on the road beginning Saturday night at Liacouras Center against Temple, whom has won the last two games in the series.Â
Â
Each team is coming off of a loss this past Wednesday. Temple suffered its fourth straight defeat as it lost 78-63 in Storrs to UConn, while East Carolina suffered its fourth loss in five games, falling 69-59 at home to No 21 Houston.Â
Â
Â
During that stretch of five games for the Pirates, they have averaged 62.0 points per game while allowing 72.4 points. Temple has averaged 64.2 points and given up 70.8 over its last five.Â
Â
Â
Against Houston on Wednesday, the Pirates held the nation's 21st-ranked team to 39.3 percent shooting, but were unable to capitalize on the Cougars' poor shooting performance. ECU shot just 32 percent itself and made only 4 of 23 outside the 3-point arc.Â
Â
Â
Jayden Gardner carried the load for the Pirates that night, posting season-highs for points (29) and rebounds (19) for his 10th double-double of the season.Â
Â
Â
Gardner leads the conference in overall scoring with 21.3 points per game. Since conference play began, Gardner is averaging 22.3 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, tops in The American in both categories. He ranks 11th overall in NCAA Division I in scoring.Â
Â
Â
Gardner is the only Pirate to average double figures this season with freshmen Brandon Suggs (9.4 ppg) and Tristen Newton (8.6 ppg) ranking second and third. The trio has scored 57 percent of the team's points this year and 84 percent of all Pirates points over their last five.Â
Â
Â
Senior guard Quinton Rose leads Temple in scoring (15.4 ppg) assists (3.8 apg) and steals (2.0 spg), ranking among the top 10 in the conference in each of those categories.
Â
Â
Junior guard Nate Pierre-Louis, who scored a career-high 22-points vs. Cincinnati, leads Temple in rebounding (8.3 rpg), while ranking second in scoring (11.1 ppg), assists (2.8 apg) and steals (2.0).Â
Â
Â
Rose, Pierre-Louis and Alani Moore II have collectively accounted for 52 percent of Temple's scoring this season and 60 percent of the team's points over its last five games.Â
Â
Â
Temple and ECU are meeting for the 10th time after beginning the all-time series in 2014-15. The teams have met just once in each of the last two seasons with the Owls winning both. Temple has won all four meetings in the Liacouras Center and leads the all-time series 6-3.
