GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina goes after its fifth 5-0 start in school history – third as a Division I institution – Thursday inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum against North Florida at 5 p.m.
Thursday's game will mark the final game of a four-game homestand and last of three games in six days for ECU, as well as the first meeting between the Pirates and Ospreys, but the 14th time coach Joe Dooley has faced UNF.
As the coach at Florida Gulf Coast, Dooley posted a 10-3 record versus North Florida which included a victory in the 2017 ASUN Championship game.
Dooley's Pirates are coming off an 88-78 win against UNCW in overtime Monday night, while UNF dropped its sixth straight start the year against Florida Atlantic, 77-75.
East Carolina led by 14 at halftime, but fell behind by 10 late in the second half before rallying for an overtime victory. J.J. Miles scored a career-high 22 points, burying 6 of 7 3-point attempts, and Bitumba Baruti added a career-best 17 points. Jayden Gardner posted his first double-double of the year, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
ECU made 14 of 24 (.583) from beyond the 3-point arc , while holding the Seahwaks to 7 of 22 (.318).
Gardner is putting up 20.3 points and seven rebounds to lead the way for the Pirates. Complementing Gardner is Tristen Newton, who is accounting for 9.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
The Ospreys have been led by Josh Endicott, who is averaging 9.4 points and 7.4 rebounds while its preseason all-conference selection and leading scorer from last season, Carter Hendricksen, is sidelined after suffering a foot injury earlier this month. Jose Placer is the only plyer other than Hendricksen to average double digit points this season, 11.5 ppg.
The Pirates have used assists to create a lot of points this season. ECU has 73 assists on 116 field goals (63 percent), averaging 15 fast break points per game.
East Carolina has won its first three home games, scoring an average of 80.7 points while giving up 63.3. North Florida has dropped its last four road games, scoring 60.5 points and allowing 83.5 points during those contests.
