GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina track and field program heads to Lynchburg, Va., this weekend for the Darius Dixon Memorial on the campus of Liberty University.
Â
The meet is the Pirates' final competition before they head to the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in a couple of weeks.
Â
"We are very excited to compete in our last tune up before the AAC Indoor Championships," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We have always enjoyed competing at Liberty University. The facility is beautiful, and the track is very fast."
Â
ECU has certainly tested itself against top competition thus far, having attended meets at North Carolina, Virginia Tech and South Carolina. The women continue to hold strong in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Southeast Regional rankings, moving up one spot to No. 13 this week.
Â
On the AAC performance lists, junior Sommer Knight and senior thrower Ryan Davis are ranked first in the pole vault and weight throw respectively. On the national scale, Davis is fourth in the weight throw while freshman Melicia Mouzzon is 16th in the 60-meter dash, Knight is 31st in the pole vault and junior Mackenzie Whitaker is 29th in the pentathlon.
Â
"Both teams have enjoyed a very good indoor season up to this point," Kraft added. "We have to continue to compete with heart and a lot of enthusiasm throughout this weekend. Another key to success, as everyone knows, is that we have to remain completely healthy. We will see very good competition once again this weekend as we have seen throughout the entire indoor season."
