Pirates Top Campbell 4-3 For Third Straight Win
February 14, 2020 | Women's Tennis
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the third straight match, the ECU women's tennis team grabbed a 4-3 win, this one at the expense of Campbell on Friday afternoon.
"We did not play great today," said associate head coach Kirstin Burgess. "It was our first outdoor match of the year and it showed. But again we fought incredibly hard and came out with the win. Credit to the Camels for really bringing it to us today."
ECU improves to 3-2 while Campbell drops to 5-2.
The Pirates got the day started off on the right foot by taking the doubles point. Michelle Ncube and Ho Chiao Hsia beat Lucile Pons and Alexandra Nicoara 6-3 on court two. Hanna Axelsson and Minette Van Vreden then beat Ciara O'Toole and Lou Regen 6-4 on court three to clinch the point.
ECU got a second point quickly in singles. Lisa Hofbauer knocked off Ana Castillo 7-5, 6-1 on court one to make it 2-0. After Lea Cutura beat Sibel Tanik 6-2, 6-4 on court two to get Campbell on the board, Axelsson put ECU within a point of clinching when she beat Nicoara 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 on court five.
From there though, the Camels fought back. Lou Regen beat Ncube 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 and then Pons topped Nastja Rettich 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to tie the match at three.
The match came down to Hsia against Essence Martins on court six. Unlike the past two matches that came down to a third-set tiebreaker, Hsia took care of business earlier, beating Martins 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 to clinch the third straight Pirates victory.
ECU will face its stiffest test of the year on Saturday morning. The Pirates will head east to Chapel Hill to take on No. 1 UNC with first serve scheduled for 11 a.m., at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
