No. 1 North Carolina Proves Too Much For ECU
February 15, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A three-match winning streak came to an end as the ECU women's tennis team could not keep up with No. 1 North Carolina, falling 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
"Today was the complete opposite of yesterday," said associate head coach Kirstin Burgess."We really played well in a lot of places, but Carolina showed why they are the number one team in the country right now. Hopefully we can use the tennis we played today to gain some confidence and play well in our match against App State on Wednesday."
ECU falls to 3-3 on the season while the Tar Heels are a perfect 11-0.
The doubles were dominated by the Tar Heels. North Carolina got one win when Cameron Morra and Elizabeth Scotty beat Lisa Hofbauer and Sibel Tanik 6-1 on court one.
The point was clinched when Kacie Harvey and Anika Yarlagadda topped Ho Chiao Hsia and Minette Van Vreden 6-2 on court three.
Although the Pirates had early leads, North Carolina turned those deficits around and won four of the opening stanzas. The first match to end was on court three when No. 23 Alle Sanford beat Ncube 6-4, 6-0. North Carolina added another point through Scotty who beat Tanik 6-3, 6-0 on court two.
The match was clinched after Patel beat Hsia 6-4, 6-2 on court six.
While North Carolina had the advantage in the majority of singles matches, the Pirates did take the lead on a pair of courts. Hofbauer was matched with ninth-ranked Morra on court one and in the early going, Hofbauer dominated her ranked opponent. The senior Pirate won the first set 6-1, but Morra answered with a 6-1 second set to tie the match. Hofbauer had taken an early 1-0 lead in the decisive third-set when the Tar Heels clinched the match.
Like Hofbauer, Van Vreden also won her first set 6-1, this against Harvey on court five. Harvey won 6-0 in the second set and led 4-1 in the third set when the match was clinched.
The Pirates will try to get back in the win column on Wednesday afternoon with a road trip to Appalachian State. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m., in Boone, N.C.
