GREENVILLE, N.C. – After splitting a pair of matches last weekend, the ECU women's tennis team will take on App State on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
"App State has seen a lot of positive changes and improvements since we last played them in a dual match," said associate head coach Kirstin Burgess. "We will be playing them indoors at their home facility so we will have to adjust to the faster conditions quickly. This is going to be another tough one that we will have to work really hard to pull through."
Â
ECU (3-3) beat Campbell 4-3 last weekend, but the Pirates' three-match winning streak was snapped with a 4-0 loss at No. 1 North Carolina. Lisa Hofbauer has won three straight matches on court one for the Pirates and was headed leading in the third set against North Carolina's No. 9 Cameron Morra when the Tar Heels clinched the match. Michelle Ncube, Nastja Rettich and Sibel Tanik all lead the Pirates with nine singles wins. In doubles, Ncube and Rettich lead the team with six wins and are 1-1 on court two. It will be the seventh straight road match to open the season for the Pirates, with one more scheduled on Saturday before ECU plays its home opener on Friday, Feb. 28.
Â
App State (3-2) has won three straight matches after starting the season 0-2. The Mountaineers most recently won a 5-2 road match against UNCW. Kate Earnhardt (12-9), Cassie McLay (12-10) and Maria Zacarias (12-6) all lead App State with 12 singles wins. Sasha Pisareva, a transfer from Utah State, did not play during the fall, but is a perfect 5-0 since making her App State debut and has won all five matches on court one. Pisareva is currently ranked No. 48 in the ITA singles rankings. In doubles, McLay and Zacarias are a team-best 13-4 and have gone 2-1 on court one. Earnhardt and Teodora Sevo are 10-3 together, but have not played in a dual match.
Â
Before 2018, ECU and App State had met every year for 13 straight years. The Pirates dominanted in that span, going 12-1 against the Mountaineers. In the most recent victory, a 7-0 win in 2017, Hofbauer and Rettich both got a singles and doubles win.

First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m., on Wednesday afternoon at App State's Applachian Tennis Courts. Fans can follow the live scoring here.
