
ECU Maintains Hold On First Place At The American Championships

HOUSTON – After two days of competition East Carolina remains in first-place at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the CRWC Natatorium.

The Pirates (292) hold a 25-point lead over second-place Cincinnati (267) followed by UConn (224) and SMU (212).

ECU's lone victory of the night came in the final event of the evening, 200 freestyle relay. The Pirates' foursome of Pedro Gueiros, Eric Hinderup, Gustavo Santos and James Ward edged SMU's squad by 0.31 seconds to claim ECU's second relay title of the event.

Sophomore Marek Osina collected the Pirates' first individual swimming medal, finishing second in the 200 IM with time of 1:45.81 which was just 0.31 seconds behind Cincinnati's Dominic Polling (1:45.58).

Guerios and Ward placed second and third, respectively, in the 50 freestyle. UConn's William Kearsey finished first with a meet record time of 19.48. Guerios touched in a time of 20.05 followed by Ward at 20.05. Santos finished in fourth-place with a time of 20.13.

Freshman Kristen Stege claimed the lone medal for the ECU women Thursday night, capturing bronze in the women's 500 freestyle with a time of 4:43.85. Houston's Zarena Brown won the event with a championship record time of 4:41.89.

The Cougars have won all seven events on the women's side and lead the field with 388.5 points. SMU is a distant second with 279.5 points followed by Cincinnati (212), East Carolina (183), Tulane (149) and UConn (133).
