GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina track and field program's indoor season culminates this weekend in Birmingham, Ala., where the Pirates will participate in the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. The meet is scheduled for Feb. 28-29 at the Birmingham CrossPlex and will air on the American Digital Network.
Â
"Both teams are extremely excited about competing this weekend," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. We have had a great season up to this point and there's no reason to believe that this will not continue right through this weekend."
Â
In last year's event, the women's team finished in seventh place while the men took eighth. Then sophomore Mackenzie Whitaker claimed the silver medal in the long jump while the 4x400 relay squad of Cedrina Singletary, D'Nia Freeman, Courtney Warner and Shellbi Chapman captured the bronze.
Â
Senior Ryan Davis enters the weekend as the favorite in the weight throw. His season-best attempt of 22.20 meters currently stands eighth nationally and is the American Conference record.
Â
On the women's side, junior Sommer Knight will battle for gold in the pole vault as her mark of 4.15 meters paces the league and is 34th on the national scale.
Â
Other contenders for all-conference honors (top-three finishes in each event) include freshman Melicia Mouzzon in the 60-meter dash, freshman Royal Burris in the 60-meter dash and Whitaker in the pentathlon.
Â
"Our goals are very high for this weekend," Kraft added. "If they compete like I know they can, the rest will take care of itself. Obviously, this is the meet that you want everybody to peak and have their very best performances of the year. It was nice to have a weekend off last weekend. I feel like everybody should be very well rested both mentally and physically. I do know one thing for sure. Everybody will compete with 100% effort and let the chips fall where they may."
