GREENVILLE, N.C. – The first split squad weekend of East Carolina's indoor season is here as the Pirates travel to the Doc Hale Elite Meet in Blacksburg, Va., as well as the Camel City Invitational.
Â
"This is our second trip to Virginia Tech for this indoor season," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We always enjoy competing on their facility because it produces fast times. We will see a lot better competition this time around than we did on our first trip."
Â
ECU enjoyed a strong effort at the Carolina Challenge last weekend, setting a pair of school records in the weight throw and pole vault.
Â
Senior Ryan Davis cleared 22.20 meters in the weight throw to set a new facility record and increase his lead on the American Athletic Conference performance list while moving up to fourth nationally. He was also tabbed the AAC Male Field Athlete of the Week. Additionally, Davis is currently ranked third in the conference in the shot put.
Â
Junior Sommer Knight turned in a mark of 4.15 meters in the pole vault to take the league lead. She bettered her old program standard of 4.14 meters.
Â
Entering the weekend, freshman Melicia Mouzzon is second in the American Conference in the 60m while junior Mackenzie Whitaker is second in the pentathlon and the women's 4x400 relay squad sits third.
Â
After earning a No. 13 ranking in this season's initial United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Southeast Region poll, the women's team is slotted 14th this week.
Â
"We are at a point in our season where things are really starting to come together," Kraft added. "As I've mentioned before, we have to continue to get better each and every weekend. Both the men's and women's teams are in really good places at this point of our indoor season."
