GREENVILLE, N.C. – Recent ECU graduates Lisa Hofbauer and Dorthea Forbrigd will try to add another honor to their prestigious careers as the pair are each one of a record 605 nominees for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Â
Rooted in Title IX, the NCAA Woman of the Year Award was established in 1991 to recognize graduating female student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
Â
A native of Birkfeld, Austria, Hofbauer has held the top spot in the ECU tennis lineup for the past two seasons. During her junior campaign, Hofbauer went 17-12 in singles play, including 14-4 on court one, as she helped the Pirates to a record-breaking 22-3 record. Hofbauer also went 21-7 in doubles play and was nationally ranked when paired with both Celia Ruiz and Alisa Diercksen, reaching as high as No. 43 in the ITA rankings. Hofbauer was named to the AAC All-Conference team following the year, becoming the second Pirate to earn a spot on the all-league team.
Â
Hofbauer's success continued in her senior campaign, as she was 10-7 in singles play and won her individual draw at the ECU Invitational. She went toe-to-toe with North Carolina's ninth-ranked Cameron Morra, leading in the third set before the match was left unfinished by a Tar Heels clincher and had won eight of her final nine matches before the remainder of the season was cancelled. Hofbauer graduated from ECU in May 2020 with a degree in economics, marketing and professional selling and had a GPA of 3.956.
Â
Forbrigd has been one of the top golfers in ECU history. She is a two-time All-AAC selection and had the program's second-best single season scoring average in 2018-19, posting a 72.48 average. She has posted 10 top-five finishes and 14 top-10 placements in her career.
Â
Forbrigd was at the top of her game in the shortened 2019-20 season as she shot an average of 71.55 and had four top-20 finishes, including a first-place finish at the Pirate Collegiate Classic. She now holds the school-record for lowest career scoring average at 73.06 and has three individual titles in her collegiate career.
Â
The Oslo, Norway native has had success in the classroom as well, as she is a four-time Women's Golf Coaches Association Division I Scholar All-America honoree and three-time AAC All-Academic Team selection. Forbrigd also graduated in May with a degree in business management and held a GPA of 3.917.
Â
Conference offices will select up to two nominees each from their pool of member school nominees. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership will choose the Top 30 honorees, 10 from each division.
Â
From the Top 30, the Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division and announce nine finalists. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named this fall.
