Baseball Earns Fifth-Straight ABCA Academic Excellence Award

GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the fifth-straight year, the East Carolina baseball team received the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award the association announced Monday.

The Pirates, who sported a 3.52 GPA for the 2019-20 academic year, are one of six American Athletic Conference teams to be honored joining Cincinnati, Memphis, Tulane, USF and Wichita State. ECU has registered a 3.05 or higher grade point average in 11 of 12 semesters, including a team-best 3.61 in the spring of 2020, which bested the previous mark of 3.52 (fall 2017).

Under sixth-year head coach Cliff Godwin, a two-time Academic All-America selection, his teams have combined to have 300 members on the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll (3.0 or higher), while 87 Pirates have earned inclusion on The American All-AcaÂdemic Team maintaining a minimum 3.00 GPA, including all 36 members from last year's club.

Following the 2020 season, Pirates earned their fifth-straight Team Academic Excellence Award (2016-20) from the ABCA, while claiming four consecutive AAC Team Academic Excellence Awards from 2016-19. Four players have earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since 2016 (Travis Watkins/2016 first-team, Charlie Yorgen/2016 third-team, Jake Agnos/2019 first-team, Alec Burleson/2016 third-team and 2020 first-team). Burleson became the third player in program history to be named a two-time Academic All-America selection joining Godwin (1999, 2001) and Sam Narron (2001-02).

In the fall of 2019, all 36 members of the club posted a 3.44 cumulative GPA with 34 earning ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll accolades. In the spring, 33 student-athletes were named to the ECU Honor Roll while Ben Newton and Carter Spivey both registered a 4.0 GPA.
