East Carolina concludes a whirlwind week Saturday afternoon inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum against American Athletic Conference foe Tulsa.
The Pirates will be playing their third game of the week following a 15-day layoff due to the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had their head coach Joe Dooley quarantined at home for the previous two games.
ECU suffered its fourth straight loss on Wednesday night, falling to UCF by seven, 71-64, in Orlando. The Pirates trailed by 17 and halftime, but fought back to pull within three in the game's final minutes. However, the Knights scored five straight to hold off the Pirates' comeback. Jayden Gardner scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Tremont Robinson-White added 18 in the loss.
Tulsa has lost three of its last four games after starting conference play at 4-1, including a one-point win over Houston. The Golden Hurricane is coming off its second consecutive defeat Monday at Temple. Rey Idowu led TU with 20 points in the loss. Elijah Joiner added 15 and Brandon Rachal had 12.
Joiner, Rachal and Jackson have combined to account for 46 percent of the team's scoring this season, including 51 percent of all Golden Hurricane points over the last five games. Rachal is shooting 34.5 percent outside the arc this season, but had made just 4 of 13 the past three games.
Tulsa ranks third in The American in scoring defense, allowing just 63.8 points per game, and second in field goal percent defense, holding its opponents to 38.7 percent from the field.
East Carolina has averaged only 60.8 points per game over its last five games and are shooting 38.4 percent in conference play.
Gardner has posted a double-double in each of the last three games and currently ranks fourth in the conference in scoring (16.7 ppg) and second in rebounding (8.1 rpg). Robinson-White has registered three consecutive double-digit scoring performances, averaging 20.7 points per game, shooting 52 percent overall and burying 9-of-20 3-point shots.
The Pirates will look to end a seven-game losing streak to Tulsa and earn their first series win since 2017.
