Pirates Return To Action At ITA Regionals

GREENVILLE, N.C. – After a month without matches, the East Carolina women's tennis team will return to competition as the Pirates head to Winston-Salem for the ITA Carolina Regional Championships.

"Regionals will be our biggest event this season!" said head coach Kirstin Burgess. "We will have opportunities to play athletes from nationally ranked institutions all weekend. The ladies have been practicing hard and are ready to put their hard work into real matches."

Four Pirates will head to the regional championships, with Alisa Diercksen playing in her third regional while Martina Muzzolon, Anne Lou Champion and Ines Bachir will be making their debuts in the competition. Along with the quartet competing in singles play, Champion and Bachir will form a doubles pair while Diercksen and Muzzolon will form a duo.

Bachir leads the Pirates with a 4-2 singles ledger, having gone 2-1 at both the Liberty Invitational and the Elon Invitational. Like Bachir, Champion is coming off reaching the final of her individual draw at the Elon Invitaional, having won the first two singles matches of her collegiate career there. Muzzolon is the other Pirate with a singles record above .500, having gone 3-2 so far this year. Diercksen started the fall slowly on the singles courts, but picked up her first victory of the year her last time out.

In doubles play, Bachir and Champion have started to build a successful partnership and are coming off winning their doubles flight at the Elon Invitational. It was the first individual collegiate titles for both Bachir and Champion. The tandem is currently 3-3 this fall. Muzzolon and Diercksen are looking for their first victory as a pairing, having gone 0-2 together at the Liberty Invitational.

Play will get started on Thursday, Oct. 21 at Wake Forest's Tennis Complex and will run through Monday, Oct. 25.
