ECU Opens Home Slate Against Gardner-Webb

GREENVILLE, N.C. – After a pair of road games to open the season, the East Carolina women's basketball team will get to play in Minges Coliseum for the first time with a full capacity crowd since Feb. 29, 2020 as the Pirates host Gardner-Webb on Monday night.
East Carolina (0-2) will be happy to be home after dropping the first two road games of the season. The latest loss was a 60-50 setback at High Point with the Pirates getting outscored 18-9 in the fourth quarter. The main difference between the Pirates and its opponents so far has been shots from beyond the three-point line. East Carolina is making 4.5 triples each game, but Middle Tennessee and High Point have combined to average 10.0 three's each night. The Pirates are also even in turnovers this season, turning it over 44 times and forcing 44 turnovers.
Taniyah Thompson is the only Pirate to score in double-figures this season and is coming off one of the best games of her career. The junior guard scored 28 points against High Point, one off her career-high. She shot 6-of-7 from three-point range, becoming the first player in ECU history to make at least six three-pointers twice in her career. Thompson has also helped the Pirates control the glass, averaging 4.5 rebounds. Tylar Bennett leads the team with 5.0 rebounds, while Thompson, Morgan Moseley, Synia Johnson and Tiara Chambers are all hauling in 4.5. The familiarity with the defensive scheme has also helped Thompson rack up a team-high six steals. So far, East Carolina has used its depth with 11 players averaging at least 10.5 minutes each night.
Gardner-Webb (0-2) has challenged itself at the start of the season as the Runnin' Bulldogs have gone on the road to a pair of SEC opponents, falling at Vanderbilt (75-59) and
No. 19 Georgia (97-45). Jhessyka Williams leads Gardner-Webb in scoring, averaging 20.0 points while also recording a team-high 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals. Alasia Smith is the only other Bulldog with double-digits in points (15 points, 7.5 ppg) and rebounds (12 boards, 6.0 rpg). Gardner-Webb struggled on the boards against its SEC opponents, getting outrebounded 100-53 in the two contests.
East Carolina is 4-1 all-time against Gardner-Webb, but the two programs have not battled since 2009. The Pirates are 4-0 at home against the Runnin' Bulldogs, with the last win coming in 2008. It will be the second straight matchup against a Big South team for East Carolina, who is coming off the loss at High Point. The Pirates are 2-1 against Big South teams under head coach Kim McNeill.
