GREENVILLE, N.C. – Undefeated at home, the East Carolina women's basketball team will try to continue that perfect start at the Pirates host Campbell on Sunday afternoon.
East Carolina (3-3) has started the season 3-0 at home and is coming off its largest win of the season. The Pirates throttled Coppin State 75-44, holding the Eagles to 31.5% shooting from the floor and 44 points, both season-lows for an ECU opponent. Tiara Chambers recorded the first double-double of the season and the second of her career, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Taniyah Thompson (12) and Danae McNeal (13) were the other Pirates in double-figures for scoring, the fifth time with at least 10 points for Thompson and the third for McNeal. The Pirates will be trying to start 4-0 at home for the first time since opening 7-0 in Minges Coliseum during the 2018-19 season.
Thompson leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.8 points, and she is tied for second in rebounding and steals, grabbing 4.2 boards and 1.7 takeaways. McNeal is the other Pirate scoring in double-figures, averaging 10.8 points. Chambers leads the team in both rebounding (6.2 rpg) and blocks (1.3). Alexsia Rose is the top scorer off the Pirate bench and she has stepped up in the past three games. The sophomore point guard is averaging 5.0 points on the season and 7.7 over the past three. She also leads the Pirates in assists (3.7 per game) and steals (2.0 per game), setting new career-highs with eight and five respectively against Hampton.
Campbell (3-2) comes into Greenville after a 53-42 win over UNCW on Tuesday night. The Camels outscored the Seahawks 35-13 in the first half and never allowed UNCW to get back within singles digits. It will be just the second road game of the season for Campbell, who also lost at No. 25 Virginia Tech 84-39. Taya Bolden leads Campbell in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.6 points and 7.4 rebounds. Bolden was one of two Camels to earn Big South Preseason All-Conference selections, making the second team while Shy Tuelle was named to the first team with the Camels picked to finish second. Tuelle leads Campbell in assists with 14 and is one of four Camels averaging between eight and ten points. As a team, the Camels outrebound foes 39.6 to 32.4 and have just 75 turnovers compared to 103 for opponents.
East Carolina leads the all-time series against Campbell 32-6, but it will be just the second meeting between the two schools since 2003. The Pirates beat the Camels 74-54 in the Thanksgiving Tournament in 2012. The Camels have not won in Greenville since Dec. 14, 1990 and the Pirates are 22-1 at home in the series. Campbell will be the fourth Big South opponent for East Carolina this season, with the Pirates beating Gardner-Webb and Hampton at home while losing at High Point.
Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m., on Sunday afternoon inside Minges Coliseum. Fans that bring one canned food item will be given one ticket to the game. The game will be shown on ESPN+ with Patrick Kinas and Debbie Taylor on the call and fans can follow the live stats here.
