GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina battles Old Dominion for the second time in the span of just 11 days when it hosts the Monarchs Tuesday night at 7 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
Â
The Pirates defeated the Monarchs 73-60 back on Nov. 19 at the Myrtle Beach Invitational, shooting a season-high 54.3 percent from the field and receiving an 18-point performance out of Tristen Newton.
Â
ECU (5-2) ran its record in Greenville to 4-0 last Saturday with a 70-68 victory over Coppin State. Newton knocked down a contested jumper with under one second remaining on the clock to secure the win.
Â
While Newton was the eventual hero, sophomore Brandon Suggs put together quite the game of his own with a career-high 25 points to go along with three blocks. Newton ended up scoring 16 points and freshman RJ Felton notched double figures for the first time with 10. Additionally, Brandon Johnson fell just one rebound short of the freshman single-game record by pulling down 19 boards.
Â
East Carolina shot the ball at a 42.9-percent clip from the field, knocking down 27 of 63 attempts, while the Eagles finished at 39.3 percent (24 of 61). The Pirates won the rebounding battle by two at 39-37 and finished with 19 assists. East Carolina's 15 offensive boards led to 23 second chance points.
Â
ECU trails the series with Old Dominion by a 38-15 count and had lost six straight against the Monarchs before the win in Conway.
Â
The Pirates will attempt to finish the month of November with six wins for the first time since the 2013-14 season. That year, the squad put together a 17-17 record and made an appearance in the CIT.
Â
The Competition
Old Dominion (3-4) snapped a three-game skid in defeating Longwood 63-62 at home on Nov. 26. Head coach Jeff Jones was back on the sideline after missing the last couple of contests due to a bout of illness. Mekhi Long led ODU with 18 points, adding six rebounds and four blocked shots. C.J. Keyser scored 12 points while Jaylin Hunter notched five points and six assists. The Monarchs trailed the Lancers by as many as 14 points in the first half before Long laid the basketball in at the final buzzer to secure the victory.
Â
Coppin State Leftovers
East Carolina used a different starting lineup for the first time in 2021-22 with Robinson-White and Johnson making their first starts of the campaign ... The Pirates have scored at least 70 points in all but one game this season ... Newton's buzzer beater was the second of his ECU career with the other occurring in a 71-68 victory over SMU back on Jan. 11, 2020 ... East Carolina's bench was out-scored for the first time in 2021-22 ... The Pirates have won 15 of their last 17 non-conference games ... Newton has scored in double figures in 10-straight contests.
Â
Against Conference USA
The Pirates are 64-118 against current members of Conference USA. ECU was a men's basketball member of the league starting with the 2001-02 season before joining the American Athletic Conference prior to the 2014-15 campaign.
