East Carolina (5-5) went into the exam break with its best effort of the season. The Pirates throttled North Carolina Central 75-34, including holding the Eagles to zero points in the first quarter. East Carolina finished with 37 forced turnovers, the most since forcing 41 against Virginia Intermont on Nov. 8, 2013. The 34 points by the Eagles were also the fewest allowed by ECU since giving up 33 against Loyola (Md.) on Dec. 9, 2014. The Pirates finished with more than 50 rebounds for the second straight game, outrebounding NC Central 57-38, including 24-9 on offensive rebounds.
Taniyah Thompson led the way offensively against NC Central just like she has all season. The junior guard finished with 21 points, her third game with at least 20 points, and leads ECU in scoring with 15.3 ppg. Thompson is also third on the team in rebounding (4.2 rpg) and tied for second in steals (19). East Carolina currently ranks tenth in the country in steals, with 121 and 12th in forced turnovers, averaging 23.3. The Pirates are also in the top-25 of the nation in free throw attempts (20th, 208) and offensive rebounds (23rd, 15.7 per game). Â Individually, Danae McNeal is 70th in the NCAA in steals with 21, while Alexsia Rose is 80th in assists with 40.
North Carolina A&T (2-6) comes into the game on a two-game winning streak, both of which came at home. The Aggies started the year off with six games away from home before beating South Carolina State (86-46) and North Carolina Central (60-55). Chanin Scott averages 12.9 points and 7.5 rebounds to lead the Aggies in both categories. Jazmin Harris is second on the team in scoring, averaging 8.9 points and has a team-high eight blocked shots. As a team, the Aggies have done a good job of turning opponents over, ranking 48th in the country in turnovers forced with 20.88 per game. That has been especially true in their two victories, with North Carolina A&T forcing a combined 46 turnovers in the past two games.
East Carolina leads the all-time series against North Carolina A&T 10-5, but this will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2008. East Carolina is 3-4 all-time on the road against the Aggies, winning the last time in Nov. 2005. It will also be the fifth and final game against a Big South opponent this year for the Pirates. ECU fell at High Point in the second game of the year and has since beaten Gardner-Webb, Hampton and Campbell at home. Â
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., at NC A&T's Corbett Sports Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and fans can follow the live stats here.
