East Carolina (4-4) was neck-and-neck with VCU for three quarters on Wednesday night, but a five minute scoreless streak shut down the Pirates' chance to get its first road win of the season, falling 65-48. Danae McNeal set a new career-high with six steals to lead ECU, the most steals by a Pirate this season. McNeal also had 11 points, one of two Pirates to score in double-figures. The other was Taniyah Thompson, who led the team with 12 points, the seventh time in eight games that the junior guard has scored in double figures. Morgan Moseley scored a season-high seven points for ECU off the bench, while Alexsia Rose also had seven.
Towson (6-1) comes in on a three game winning streak and the only loss this season came against current No. 2 NC State. The Tigers have been unstoppable in their six wins, outscoring opponents 88.5 to 53.7 and winning all six by at least 16 points. The high-powered Tiger offense is led by Aleah Nelson, who 55th in the nation in scoring, averaging 18.1 points, and 11th in the country in assists per game, handing out 6.4 per game. Nelson is one of four Tigers scoring in double figures, with Allie Kubek scoring 15.1 ppg, Anissa Rivera at 12.3 ppg and Tarriyonna Gary at 10.6 ppg. Leading Towson on the glass is former Pirate Ryann Evans, who transferred to Towson after two years of wearing the Purple and Gold. Evans averages 7.7 rebounds, helping the Tigers out rebound opponents 46.7 to 36.0 each night. It will be just the second road game of the season for Towson, with the other being the loss at NC State.
It will be the third all-time meeting between East Carolina and Towson, including the second in two seasons. Last year, Towson won 89-81 in the opener for both teams. Thompson had 14 points for the Pirates while Synia Johnson scored 10 points in her collegiate debut. The first meeting between the two schools came in 2009, with ECU taking a 68-45 home win in the Lady Pirate Invitational.
Tipoff is scheduled for 12 noon on Saturday afternoon in Minges Coliseum. It will be ECU's annual Diabetes Awareness game and fans can bid on player-designed t-shirts with all proceeds being used to purchase diabetic supplies for a person in need in Greenville. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Evan Budrovich and Debbie Taylor on the call and fans can follow the live stats here.
