GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina begins the month of February Saturday evening when it travels to the Bluff City for an American Athletic Conference contest against Memphis inside the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The matchup is the Pirates' first with the Tigers this season.

ECU seeks its first win since Dec. 22 when it knocked off Tulane 72-64 in Greenville. The Pirates ended January with a 68-59 setback to Tulsa at home as Taniyah Thompson paced the team with 13 points while Sierra Dacosta and Dominique Claytor added 10 apiece. East Carolina out-rebounded the Golden Hurricane 41-40 but committed 19 turnovers which led to 21 Tulsa points.

Lashonda Monk averages a team-best 13.9 points per game with Thompson also putting up double figures (11.2). ECU is producing 57.5 points, 34.1 rebounds, 10.1 assists, 10.9 steals and 2.3 blocks per game and shoots the ball at a 35.4-percent clip from the field. The Pirates lead the American Conference in steals per game and are second in turnover margin (+3.93). Nationally, East Carolina slots 10th in total steals (163), 24th in steals per game and 32nd in turnovers forced per game (20.27). Monk, who ranks in the top 10 in the AAC in six different categories, finds herself 25th in the country in steals per game (2.8) and 30th in total steals (37).

The Pirates are 3-5 away from home this season, picking up wins over Virginia, SMU and Cincinnati.

Scouting Memphis
Memphis enters the day with a 4-7 overall record and 2-4 mark in AAC play. The Tigers most recently defeated Tulsa by a 59-50 margin at home on Jan. 23 before having their next two games cancelled and postponed. Dulcy Mendjiadei Fankam leads the squad in scoring average at 14.9 points per game while Alana Davis is contributing 12.7 points per outing. As a unit, Memphis is putting up 62.5 points, 40.9 rebounds, 13.7 assists, 5.9 steals and 3.5 blocks per game while shooting the ball at 39 percent from the floor. The Tigers lead the American Conference in free throw percentage (.719) and are second in rebounding margin (+5.4). Melissa McFerrin is in her 13th season as head coach at Memphis.

The Memphis Series
East Carolina swept the season series from Memphis a year ago, winning at home 71-65 before picking up a 61-57 victory in the return trip to Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers lead the overall series by a slim 17-16 margin. ECU is 4-12 against Memphis on the road and had lost eight straight in the Bluff City before last season's win.

American Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship
The 2021 and 2022 American Women's Basketball Championships will be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The 14,000-seat arena, which opened in the Fall of 2019, features two premium club spaces, 40 suites, 32 loge boxes and a warmup arena that can stage a full practice court. The American basketball tournaments are scheduled to be held in the same city and venue for the first time in conference history. The 2021 women's tournament will feature each of the league's 11 teams in a single-elimination tournament. Three first-round games will take place on Monday, March 8, followed by four quarterfinal matchups on Tuesday, March 9. The semifinal contests will be played on Wednesday, March 10, with the championship game slated for Thursday, March 11.
