ECU Hosts North Carolina A&T In Spring Finale

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina closes out the 2020-21 spring campaign Friday afternoon with a home non-conference match against North Carolina A&T.

The contest, scheduled for a 4 p.m. start, will be streamed live via Pirates All-Access. ECU will celebrate the careers of Camryn Allen, Sydney Hall, Kaiya Heyliger-Powell, Alisi Motu'apuaka and Bri Wood following the match.

The Pirates enter Friday's affair with a 4-7 overall record after defeating Davidson in five sets at Belk Arena back on March 21. Sydney Kleinman connected for a match-high 20 kills while five different ECU players recorded double-doubles. Janiece Jefferies tallied career bests of 29 assists and 25 digs to earn American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Kleinman leads the Pirates in total kills (142) and kills per set (3.38) and is also one of six Pirates averaging more than 2.00 digs per set with a 2.24 mark. Wood has been another top offensive performer, checking in with 141 kills (3.36 per set), while also pulling her weight defensively with 131 digs (3.12 per set).

Allen has collected the most digs of anyone on the roster, ranking sixth in the American Athletic Conference at 4.33 per set (182 total). S'mara Riley slots second in the league in blocks per set (1.18).

As a team, East Carolina is averaging 12.33 kills, 11.57 assists, 0.95 aces, 18.26 digs and 2.14 blocks per set with a .188 hitting percentage. The Pirates are second in the league in blocks per set as well as digs per set and opposing hitting percentage (.183).

Since losing to East Carolina in four sets in Greensboro back on Feb. 5, North Carolina A&T (8-1, 8-0 MEAC) has reeled off eight-straight 3-0 victories. The Aggies are 4-0 away from home with wins over North Carolina Central and South Carolina State. Fatimah Shabazz leads the club with 102 kills (3.64 per set) and is hitting .364. Andrea Laboy-Rivera anchors the back row, putting up 102 digs (3.64 per set). At the net, Shaylyn Hall is averaging 1.06 blocks per set. A&T is producing 13.54 kills, 12.46 assists, 2.25 aces, 13.86 digs and 1.54 blocks per set while hitting .303 as a team.
