
ECU Set To Play In American Championship

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's golf team will look to solidify its position for postseason play when it participates in the 2021 American Women's Golf Championship, which starts Sunday, April 18. The three-day, 54-hole event is being held the 6,290-yard, par-72 in Pinehurst, N.C.

The Pirates (34-22), who are ranked No. 71 in the latest Golfstat rankings, are one of six teams competing in the championships that are ranked among the Top 100 nationally and are joined by Houston (No. 20), UCF (No. 31), Tulsa (No. 56), USF (no. 68) and SMU (No. 92).

Second-year head coach CC Buford will use a lineup consisting of Michelle Forsland (senior), Oda Sofie Kilsti (sophomore), Dorthea Forbrigd (senior), Kathryn Carson (senior) and Julie Boysen Hillestad (junior).

A trio of upperclassmen lead the Pirates in stroke average heading into the league championships. Hillestad, who was named AAC Golfer-of-the-Week on April 9th, owns a 74.40 stroke average and has recorded a pair of Top 5 placements including third at the River Landing Classic (207/9-under) and a share of fifth at the ECU Easter Invitational (218/2-over).

Forbrigd is second on the club with a 74.58 average after participating in four events. She has a pair of Top 20 finishes which includes a season-best share of sixth at the Palmetto Intercollegiate (223/7-over). In five tournaments this spring, Forsland sports a 74.60 stroke average and has tallied four Top 25 placements which includes a share of 11th at the River Landing Classic (215/1-under) and a tie of 16th at ECU's home event a couple weeks ago (223/7-over).

Kilsti has played in four events during the spring and owns a 75.33 average to rank fourth on the team. She has posted two top 11 finishes including a career-best share of seventh at the ECU Easter Invitational with her three-over par 219. In her second event of the season, she finished tied for 11th at the River Landing Classic with a career-best 54-hole total of 215 (1-under). Carson sports a 76.93 stroke average with one Top 25 finish coming at the River Landing Classic claiming a share of 21st (219/3-over).

Kilsti will carry the honorary Major Mikeal Murray bag for this event. The Pirates are participating in the Folds of Honor Tribute Program where the players rotate in carrying the bag from tournament to tournament. Once the golf season ends, the bag will be auctioned off and all proceeds will go towards Folds of Honor scholarships.

Play on the Pinehurst No. 6 course begins between 8-8:32 a.m. (ET) off the first tee with No. 1 seed Houston and No. 2 seed UCF pairing off. Players from No. 3 seed Tulsa and No. 4 seed USF will head out from 8:40-9:12 a.m., followed immediately by No. 5 seed East Carolina and No. 6 seed SMU at 9:20-9:52 a.m. No. 7 seed Tulane and No. 8 seed Memphis are set to take the course from 10-10:32 a.m., and No. 9 seed Cincinnati and No. 10 seed Wichita State round out the entries at 10:40-11:12 a.m. The field will be re-paired for both day two and day three based on subsequent scoring.
