CLEARWATER, Fla. – Gavin Williams tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout and got a 10-hit outing from his offense as No. 11 and top seed East Carolina defeated Memphis 12-0 in seven innings at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Friday, May 28 at BayCare Ballpark.

With the win, ECU (40-14) advances to the semifinals and will play fifth seed UCF (30-28) Saturday, May 28 at 9 a.m. The Pirates will need to defeat the Knights twice on Saturday to advance to the championship game on Sunday. Memphis closes out the season with an 18-30 ledger.

Williams, the AAC Pitcher-of-the-Year, improved to 10-0 on the season after twirling his first career complete-game shutout. The right-hander allowed four hits, walked two and struck out 10 batters for the fifth time in a game this season, while registering his seventh quality start. He fanned at least one batter in six of his seven frames and had multiple punch outs four times, including a pair in the seventh.

Connor Norby, the leagues player-of-the-year, went 2-for-3 with three RBI and scored a run to help pace the Pirates 10-hit attack. Zach Agnos and Alec Makarewicz each had a pair of hits, while Thomas Francisco (two) and Bryson Worrell (three) plated multiple runs.

The Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI fielder's choice squeeze bunt by Lane Hoover that scored Makarewicz for the game's first run. Ryder Giles followed with an RBI single to center pushing across Seth Caddell.

Blake Wimberley (2-9) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings with three strikeouts.
