September 10, 2021 | Men's Golf
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina men's golf team will open its 2021-2022 season this weekend when the Pirates compete in the 11th Annual Rod Myers Invitational at the Duke Golf Club. Play will begin with 36 holes of continuous play on Saturday (Sept. 11), followed by a single round on Sunday (Sept. 12).
Â
Play will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday followed by scheduled tee times commencing at 7:35 a.m. on Sunday.
Â
The 13-team field includes seven teams that participate in the 2021 NCAA Championships: Charlotte, Duke, Loyola (Md.), North Carolina, NC State, North Florida and UNCW. Elon, Nebraska, Penn State, Princeton, UNCG and Virginia Tech will also be competing alongside the Pirates.
Â
Coach Kevin Williams will return to the links at the helm of the ECU men's program for the first time since October 2005 on Sunday. Williams served as the Pirates' head coach from 1995 – 2005 before exclusively taking over the head coaching duties of the ECU women's program, which he started from scratch in 2000, the following year.
Â
"I feel like a kid in candy store," Williams said. "I've been very pleased with the focus and effort thus far in practice and qualifying. The guys are fired up and ready to get going and I can't wait to get out season started Saturday at the Duke Golf Club."
Â
Williams will begin the campaign with an inexperienced lineup as three of the players in this weekend's lineup haven't played more than nine rounds in a season. Sophomore Jake Calamaro, who played only six rounds last season, earned the No. 1 spot through multiple rounds of qualifying. Stephen Carroll (73.71) and A.J. Beechler (73.10), who owned the team's two lowest scoring averages last season, line up in the No. 2 and 3 positions followed by Jack Massei and freshman Tyler DeChellis. Chris Sperrazza will play as individual.
