GREENVILLE, N.C. – After opening the season last weekend, the East Carolina women's tennis team will try to continue to improve as the Pirates compete at the Elon Invitational.
"We are more prepared and more focused looking ahead to this weekend," said head coach Kirstin Burgess. "We had a great week of practice and really ironed out some of the biggest concerns from the Liberty event. I think the ladies are ready to announce their arrivals on the college tennis scene."
Martina Muzzolon, Ines Bachir, Alisha Hussain and Anne Lou Champion all made their collegiate debuts at the Liberty Invitational. Muzzolon led the way in singles play, going 2-1 on the weekend. Bachir and Hussain also picked up victories for the Pirates.
On the doubles courts, Muzzolon and Hussain won the only match they played together as a pair. Muzzolon also played a pair of doubles matches partnered with Alisa Diercksen while Bachir and Champion formed a tandem.
Along with the Pirates, players from UNC Asheville, Kennesaw State, Navy, UNC Greensboro, and NC Central will compete this weekend. On the singles side, Muzzolon will play in the Gold draw, Bachir will be in the Powell draw, Hussain in the Acorn draw, Champion in the Oak draw and Diercksen in the Phoenix draw. In doubles play, Hussain and Muzzolon will pair together in the Maroon draw and the duo of Bachir and Champion will take part in the Powell draw.
Play at the Elon Invitational opens at 9 a.m., on Friday morning with the tournament continuing through Saturday and Sunday.
