ECU Falls To No. 10 Houston On The Road

HOUSTON, Texas – No. 10 Houston built a large lead early and did not relent in a 79-36 American Athletic Conference victory over East Carolina Saturday evening before a sellout crowd of 7,287 inside the Fertitta Center.

The Cougars (17-2, 6-0 AAC) won their 36th-straight home game while the Pirates (11-7, 2-4 AAC) will head to Memphis next week in search of their first true road victory of the season.

Kyler Edwards netted a game-high 25 points in addition to recording eight rebounds and seven assists. Josh Carlton was the other double-figure Houston scorer with 14 while he also grabbed nine rebounds. Tristen Newton paced ECU with 14 points and six rebounds. He also went 10 of 14 from the free throw line and has notched double-digit points in all but one game this campaign.

The Cougars hit on 30 of 63 (46.7 percent) from the floor and won the rebounding battle by a 49-33 margin. Houston turned 16 offensive boards into 19 second-chance points while limiting the Pirates to eight made baskets and 16-percent shooting.

In front of its raucous home crowd, the Cougars built a double-digit lead just four minutes into the game and led by as much as 30 in the first half. Houston went in front 44-14 at halftime and drained 16 of 32 attempts from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

East Carolina cut the Cougar advantage under 30 early in the second stanza but could come no closer the rest of the way.
