GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina heads out on its final two-match road swing of the season this weekend, taking on SMU and Memphis as the regular season winds to a close. The Pirates and Mustangs will do battle Friday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. while ECU faces the Tigers Sunday at 2 p.m.
Â
East Carolina (9-17, 4-10 AAC) split a pair of home contests last week, falling to Wichita State in four sets Friday evening before recording a 3-1 win over Tulsa two days later. The Pirates tallied their first victory over the Golden Hurricane since 2017 and just the third in the all-times series.
Â
Angeles Alderete was tabbed to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll as she averaged 5.38 kills and 3.13 digs per set with a pair of double-doubles. The freshman outside hitter moved into ninth on the program single-season top-10 list in kills, surpassing 400 for the campaign.
Â
Alderete checks in as not only one of the top rookies in the conference, but also one of the biggest offensive threats as she ranks third among league players in kills per set (3.94) and fourth in points per set (4.40). Payton Evenstad checks in at fourth in the American Conference in aces per set (0.33) while Kenzie Beckham is fifth in digs per set (3.72). Collectively, ECU slots third in the league in aces per set (1.47) and fourth in blocks per set (2.23). The Pirates are also one of seven clubs hitting at .200 or better as they stand at .202 entering the weekend.
Â
SMU (18-8, 11-3 AAC) finds itself third in the AAC standings after falling to UCF in four sets and sweeping South Florida on the road last week. The Mustangs dealt ECU a 3-0 setback on Oct. 23 in Greenville and lead the all-time series between the programs by a 18-5 margin. SMU ranks third in the league in hitting percentage (.246), kills per set (13.83), assists per set (12.88) and digs per set (15.60).
Â
Memphis (17-10, 7-7 AAC) is in fifth place following a pair of losses to South Florida and UCF on the road last weekend. The Tigers and Pirates played a five-set marathon back on Oct. 21 in Greenville as the visitors won the final two sets to complete the comeback win. Memphis leads the all-time series with East Carolina 24-10.
