GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team finishes out their five-game season-opening homestand when they take on the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Minges Coliseum. Tickets may be purchased here and for fans who can't make it out, the game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
The Pirates won a thriller in their last game in overtime against the High Point Panthers. Jayla Hearp had a breakout game with 17 points and 5-6 from three. Hearp scored five points in overtime as the Pirates broke the game open. It was Danae McNeal who led ECU in scoring, though with 19 points and a huge second-half performance. The Pirates outscored the Panthers 12-1 in overtime including making 5-6 free throws down the stretch.
Scouting the Buccaneers
Charleston Southern has had a rocky start to the season, winning their opener over Georgia College before dropping three straight. The Buccaneers took a beating in their last outing, falling to George Mason 74-34 on the road. The team is turning the ball over nearly 25 times per game and have a -24.3 scoring margin average through their four contests - including the 81-46 opening win.
The Buccaneers only have one double-figures scorer in Sha'Mya Leigh with 10.5 per contest. Catherine Alben and Kennedi Jackson are just behind, though, at 9.8 and 9.5 points per game. Jackson and Alben also lead in rebounding at 6.3 and 5.8, respectively. Overall, the team only has 41 assists on the season.
