GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina plays its final two matches of the 2022 season this week, hosting Temple Wednesday at 2 p.m. before visiting Cincinnati Friday at 6 p.m. Both matches will stream live via ESPN+.
Â
ECU will honor its senior class of Kianie Cummings, Shaylynn Hall and Kellyn Trowse Wednesday.
Â
The Pirates (11-19, 6-12 AAC), though out of the race for the regular season title, still have much for which to play. East Carolina can secure its second-most league victories in a campaign since joining the American Athletic Conference as well as secure season series sweeps of the Owls and Bearcats.
Â
ECU enters the final week in seventh place – just one match back of Cincinnati for sixth and two behind Memphis for fifth. The Pirates have finished higher than ninth place just once since joining the AAC (a fourth-place showing in 2017). ECU was selected ninth in this year's preseason coaches' poll.
Â
East Carolina fell to then No. 24 UCF last Friday in three sets before bouncing back Sunday for a 3-1 win over South Florida that salvaged a season series split with the Bulls.
Â
Angeles Alderete looks to put the cap on a stellar freshman season this week. She currently ranks third in the American Conference in kills per set (3.97) and fourth in points per set (4.45). Alderete has surpassed 20 kills in a match 11 times and owns a team-best 14 double-doubles. Kenzie Beckham checks in at fifth in the league in digs per set (3.89) while Hall is sixth in blocks per set (1.06).
Â
Temple (10-19, 4-14 AAC) dropped to 10th place last weekend after losing to UCF and South Florida. The Owls are 5-5 on the road this season with league wins at South Florida, Tulane and Memphis. Taylor Davenport has been the offensive catalyst for Temple, ranking fifth the conference in both kills per set (3.66) and points per set (4.16). ECU has won six of the last nine meetings with the Owls, including a five-set triumph in Philadelphia on Oct. 5.
Â
Cincinnati (9-19, 7-11 AAC) swept Tulsa and lost to Wichita State on the road last weekend. The Bearcats are 10th in the league in opposing hitting percentage (.247) and ninth in kills per set (11.95). Cincinnati leads the series with ECU by a 19-4 margin after the Pirates knocked off the Bearcats in five sets earlier this season in Greenville. The win over Cincinnati was the first for East Carolina since 2017.
Â
The American Athletic Conference does not sponsor a postseason tournament, so the regular season champion receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship.
