GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team will compete against the Liberty Flames and Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday and Sunday at UVA's Cavalier Classic in John Paul Jones Arena. Saturday's matchup with Liberty will tip off at 5 p.m. and be available for streaming on ACC Network Extra while Sunday's matchup with Virginia starts at 2 p.m. on ACC Network as well as streaming online on Extra.
Last Time Out
The Pirates (4-1) won in blowout fashion in their last game, defeating Charleston Southern 64-31. Danae McNeal starred again with 17 points and six steals, all in the first half. Tiara Chambers and Amiya Joyner tended the glass well with eight and 10 rebounds respectively. Chambers added eight points. As a team, 31 points is the fewest allowed by ECU since Dec. 2012 and 21 steals is a season high and second-highest total of the Kim McNeill era.
Scouting Liberty
After dropping their opening game to Richmond, the Flames (2-2) have come on well in their last couple contests with comfortable wins over Salem and Hampton before falling on the road at James Madison last time out. The Flames are led in scoring by Mya Berkman at 12.0 per, but she has gotten reinforcements with a couple teammates hovering just under double-digit points. Berkman leads the way in rebounding as well with nearly eight per contest and has done well getting herself to the line while making a strong percentage of her shots when she does.
Scouting Virginia
The Cavaliers (6-0) are off to a hot start to the season, running out to a 6-0 record, including a win over ECU common-opponent Wake Forest, 72-52. Virginia comes at teams with a balanced attack as four players are averaging double-figures scoring while Kaydan Lawson sits just behind at 9.7 per so far on the season. The approach is spread on the boards as well as five players are averaging five-or-more rebounds per contest.Â
Series Histories
The Pirates have played Liberty only twice before, splitting the meetings with only one coming in the Kim McNeill era, an 81-66 road loss.
ECU has played Virginia a bit more, holding a 3-2 edge in the all-time series. Most recently the teams met in Nov. 2020, a 54-51 Pirates win in the lone meeting under coach McNeill.
