GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina returns home this weekend for a pair of American Athletic Conference matches against Wichita State and Tulsa at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates and Shockers meet Friday at 6 p.m. before ECU hosts the Golden Hurricane Sunday at Noon. Both contests will stream live via ESPN+.
Â
The Pirates (8-16, 3-9 AAC) nearly rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Tulane last Friday in New Orleans, but the Green Wave outlasted East Carolina 20-18 in the deciding frame. ECU also fell in three sets to then No. 23 Houston Sunday.
Â
East Carolina has faced both Wichita State and Tulsa already this season. The Pirates dropped a 3-2 decision to the Golden Hurricane at the Reynolds Center to open league play back on Sept. 23 while the Shockers recorded a 3-0 victory over ECU two days later at Koch Arena.
Â
The Pirates have held steady in the top three in the American in blocks per set (2.24) and aces per set (1.51) while creeping up to sixth in hitting percentage (.200). Freshman Angeles Alderete slots fourth in kills per set (3.82) and points per set (4.30).
Â
Wichita State (11-11, 6-5 AAC) arrives in Greenville off a 1-1 weekend during which it swept South Florida and fell in four sets to UCF at home. The Shockers are in fifth place in the conference standings, just a half match back of Memphis. Wichita State is second in the American in blocks per set (2.25) as well as fifth in both hitting percentage (.215) and opponent hitting percentage (.208).
Â
Tulsa (10-13, 3-8 AAC) lost to UCF in four and South Florida in three last weekend and has dropped eight of its last nine. The Golden Hurricane leads the conference in digs per set (18.91) by a large margin, averaging nearly three more than Memphis. Tulsa ranks seventh among league squads in hitting percentage (.199) and opponent hitting percentage (.219).
Â
Up Next: It's back to the road next weekend as East Carolina travels to SMU and Memphis to close out the season series with the Mustangs and Tigers.
