Pirates Fall to Tulsa, 55-47
December 30, 2022 | Women's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team fell to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 55-47, Friday evening in Minges Coliseum. Amiya Joyner had another phenomenal performance, but a late comeback attempt fell short in the team's conference opener.
The Pirates (9-5) were hampered by a slow start, trailing by double figures for most of the game before erupting to life in the fourth quarter. After trailing by as much as 17, ECU forced six turnovers in the fourth quarter and drew as close as four.
Tulsa (11-3) was led once again by Temira Poindexter who looked simply unstoppable at times en route to finishing with 20 points. Poindexter knocked down four threes on the day as well as the Golden Hurricane hit seven as a team – including five in the first quarter alone to break open an early lead.
Joyner was the star of the day again for East Carolina, earning her third-straight double-double with 16 points and a season-high 16 rebounds. The freshman forward is the first ECU player to record 15-or-more rebounds in a game since Dominique Claytor pulled down 15 boards on Dec. 22, 2020, in a game at Tulane.
Morgan Mosely was the only other Pirate to score in double figures with 10, the next closest had four.
ECU showed up again on defense, recording 13 steals and holding a team which had been averaging 77.0 points per contest to only 55 - a season low for Tulsa. On top of that, the Pirates locked down the Golden Hurricane from deep in the second half, not allowing a single three after the seven in the first half.
