"We are excited to welcome UNCG to Greenville and get back in front of our home crowd," said head coach Kirstin Burgess. "The team has been working hard to fix some of the issues we saw this past weekend so it will be good to see how much has sunk in."
ECU (1-2) went 1-1 last weekend, beating Appalachian State 4-1 at home before falling at No. 6 NC State. The Pirates lost the doubles point against Appalachian State, but Martina Muzzolon, Alisha Hussain, Sofia Cerezo Holgado and Anne Lou Champion all got their first dual match victories as Pirates to comeback and clinch the match. Against NC State, Muzzolon nearly pulled off a massive upset, taking No. 8 Jaeda Daniel to a third set tiebreaker before falling. Hussain and Muzzolon each lead the Pirates with five singles victories and the pairing have played all three matches on the top two courts. Champion and Ines Bachir are tied for third with four singles wins. On the doubles side, Bachir and Champion have a team-best four wins. Â
UNCG (1-1) has split the first two matches, falling to Davidson 7-0 followed by an exciting 4-3 win over NC Central. Erika Barquero clinched the victory over NC Central with a three-set victory on court one. Juliana Craft (court three) and Olivia Gallagher (court six) also got singles victories while the Spartans also won the doubles point.
The two squads have some familiarity, having played multiple matches in the fall at various tournaments. Hussain beat Craft at the Elon Fall Invitational while Champion defeated Eugenia Camacho Fernandez at the same tournament. In doubles, Muzzolon and Hussain topped Barquero and Ariana Chan. Ines Bachir and Champion also beat Barquero and Chan at the ITA Regional Championships while Raegan Mitchell got a victory for the Spartans by beating Champion in singles play.
