GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina and South Florida meet for the second time in a span of six days Wednesday night when the Pirates host the Bulls inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the contest will stream live via ESPN+.
Â
An ECU win would give head coach Joe Dooley 100 victories at the institution.
Â
The teams did battle back on Feb. 17 in Tampa where East Carolina built as much as a 10-point cushion on the way to a 65-57 victory at the Yuengling Center. Vance Jackson paced the Pirates with 16 points while Tristen Newton produced his second career double-double to the tune of 14 points and 10 assists.
Â
The Pirates (13-13, 4-10 AAC) came up just short their last time out, seeing Darin Green Jr. hit a three pointer from the corner as time expired to lift UCF past East Carolina 69-66 at Addition Financial Arena. Newton paced four ECU players in double figures offensively with 19 points as Tremont Robinson-White, Brandon Suggs and Jackson chipped in with 14, 13 and 10 respectively. Ludgy Debaut also pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
Â
The sides were virtually equal in the shooting department as East Carolina knocked down 23 of 55 attempts (41.8 percent) as compared to UCF's 41.2-percent performance (21 of 51). The Knights finished with 10 three-point field goals and enjoyed a 16-7 advantage in assists. Both squads pulled down 33 rebounds and combined for just 18 turnovers.
Â
ECU looks for its first home victory since Jan. 15 when a Suggs buzzer beater propelled the Pirates past Memphis, 72-71. East Carolina has dropped four straight at home since then.
Â
The Competition
South Florida (7-19, 2-12 AAC) lost its fifth-straight decision Saturday, falling to Tulsa 65-57 at home. Russel Tchewa led the Bulls with 13 points and seven rebounds but the Golden Hurricane shot 52 percent from the floor and 7 of 16 from three to pull away.
Â
The South Florida Series
South Florida leads the all-time series with East Carolina 12-10 and has won four of the last six meetings. The last Pirate win over the Bulls in Greenville occurred by a 62-59 margin back on Jan. 7, 2020. ECU is 6-56 against South Florida inside Minges Coliseum.
Â
UCF Leftovers
The Pirates fell to 3-14 versus UCF since both teams joined the American Athletic Conference and have not defeated the Knights since March 12, 2015 ... ECU dropped to 2-6 in true road games ... East Carolina came up just short in its bid to win three-straight road games for the first time since 2002 ... The Pirates used the starting lineup of Newton, Reyes, Robinson-White, Jackson and Debaut for the first time ... East Carolina lost for just the second time this season when holding a team to less than 70 points ... Newton has scored in double figures in all but two games this season.
Â
Up Next: East Carolina officially wraps up its home slate Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. versus Tulsa.
