Pirates Head To 2022 AAC Indoor Championships
February 24, 2022 | Track & Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. – For the first time since 2020, the East Carolina track and field program will compete at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
Â
The meet is scheduled for Feb. 25-26 at the Birmingham CrossPlex – the site of this year's NCAA Indoor Championships. Both days of the event will stream live via ESPN+.
Â
The 2021 iteration of the league indoor meet was cancelled due to concerns over the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Â
"Obviously, this is the time of year when you would like everyone to do their absolute best," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "Both teams have had a good regular season up to this point. It's been two years since we have had an AAC Indoor Championships. I feel like both teams have prepared themselves to have a great weekend. I told the student-athletes at our Sunday night meeting that we only have to worry about us. We can't control what other teams do. There's no reason to believe that we won't have an outstanding weekend based off what we have been able to accomplish over the past four meets."
Â
ECU features a pair of defending conference champions from the 2020 meet in Brooke Stith (triple jump) and Mackenzie Whitaker (pentathlon). Other Pirates also have the opportunity to etch their names into history as Sommer Knight sits atop the league performance list in the pole vault (4.16m) while Abby Yourkavitch paces the circuit in the 5,000-meter run (17:17.16).
Â
"The athletes are competing with a lot of confidence and with a lot of energy," Kraft added. "The momentum that has been created up to this point will hopefully carry into this weekend. This is a very good league with a lot of outstanding athletes. We are up to the challenge to not only compete with them, but also beat them. One thing is for sure - we will not go down without a fight."
